Modern HA fillers contain lidocaine, and numbing cream is applied first — most people rate it a 3–4/10, more pressure than pain. Expect swelling for 24–72 hours (you'll look "more done" on day one than you will by the weekend — don't judge day-one photos) and possibly small bruises for a few days. Plan around big events: get filler at least two weeks before the wedding, the reunion, or family photos at the Davidson tree lighting — not two days.
HA lip filler is reversible. Hyaluronic-acid fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if you dislike the result or in the rare event of a complication. Two things to verify with any injector in the area: (1) they use reversible HA products, and (2) they stock hyaluronidase and are trained to use it. That second one is a genuine safety screen — an injector who can't reverse filler shouldn't be injecting it. (Yes, we stock it. Yes, you should ask us anyway.)
Typically 9–18 months, fading gradually. Lips are high-movement, so filler there breaks down faster than in cheeks. Most patients refresh once a year — far less maintenance than Botox's quarterly rhythm.
